What is a Road Rally ?

Road rallies are (almost) always held at night, when the roads have less traffic on them. They involve each crew (car, driver and navigator) following a prescribed route against a time schedule. It is not a race. The events are held on public roads and the time schedule is set at (no more than) 30mph. However, the terrain to be followed and the way the organisers provide route information, make it difficult for competitors to remain “on time”. The crew with the least time penalties at the end of the event are the winners.

The various navigation methods used to provide the route information can be found in a separate section elsewhere on this site. Depending on the event, the navigation can vary from very straightforward to mind-boggling.

The best way of getting involved with Road Rallying is to offer to marshal on an event. All organisers need a small army of marshals to run any event.
